STATEMENTS (ON THE SUBJECT OVER THE YEARS)

The Gleaned Detritus Project is the culmination of three years of collecting, arranging and combining found materials
from my Brooklyn neighborhood. As in the medieval tradition of gleaning when a lord would allow serfs to take leftovers
from already harvested fields at the end of the growing season, I have gleaned dollar stores, hardware stores, and trash
dumpsters for urban detritus. These leftover materials, both obsolete and insignificant, retain their original appearance
but not their intention; hence, the viewer is faced with a changed familiar. The change or transformation is an alchemic
attempt to make this urban detritus mythic; whereby, the obsolete and insignificant, re-contextualized, become
more splendid than the sum of its parts.

I attempt to transform urban detritus gleaned from my surroundings
into something that has a renewed presence, a changed familiar.

Interaction with this newly transformed thing is never static but instead a relationship in flux.

Through the work we become aware of the mythic in our response
to everyday materials and experiences and made to realize the implication of the insignificant.
